He says many times that playing rock and roll was all he ever wanted, but later in the film there is a clip where he says he would give it up for her. He even jokes about letting her throw up in his mouth. If thats not love, we dont know what is. 5. He had a lighter side. Many portrayals of Cobain focus heavily on his drug addiction, depression, and troubled relationship with Courtney Love. While Montage of Heck certainly doesnt shy away from these issues, we get a glimpse of a lighter side to Kurt. His music was certainly dark, but he was not all doom and gloom. Its refreshing and rare to see him crack a joke, and seeing this new side to him gave us a new perspective on on the irony and humor you hear from time to time in his songs. The Day of the Dead, the New Year/New Years Eve, and Epiphany are three widely-celebrated Hispanic holidays that are important to become familiar with. After reading about these Spanish traditions, you might even be inspired to go practice your Spanish in a Spanish-speaking country and enjoy the festivities at the same time! 1.  el Día de los Muertos The first holiday is the Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), a tradition  that you might already be familiar with, as it has spread from Mexico to the United States. On this day, family members gather to honor their deceased loved ones with elaborate celebrations. They create an altar (el altar) within their house that they decorate with photos of the deceased, as well as the deceased’s favorite foods and drinks and a circular bread that represents the cycle of life. Another bread also central to the Day of the Dead is  el pan de muertos, which has a sign of the cross on top of it. Family members will also go to the  cemetery  (el cementerio) to decorate the tombs (decorar las tumbas) with flowers (las flores). They remain there until midnight (medianoche). 2.  el Año Nuevo/Nochevieja The New Year/New Years Eve (el Año Nuevo/Nochevieja) is celebrated with festivities throughout the Hispanic world in a variety of ways. Two especially interesting traditions are those of Ecuador and Spain. In Ecuador, larger-than-life figures of key individuals from the previous year are displayed and then burned at midnight. In Spain, people consume 12  grapes (las uvas) with each strike of the clock (el reloj) at midnight. If all of the grapes are consumed in time, it symbolizes 12 months (doce meses) of good luck (buena suerte). 3.  el Día de los Reyes Another interesting Hispanic holiday that is also celebrated in the United States (although to a lesser degree than in the Hispanic world) is Epiphany (el Día de los Reyes). This day  recognizes the existence of God (Dios) in the human form as Jesus Christ. What makes this Spanish tradition especially fun is that it relates to children. Just as the three wise men (los reyes magos) visited Jesus Christ as an infant, so do the three wise men visit homes before dawn (el alba) on January 6th (el seis de enero)  to leave Christmas gifts (los regalos de Navidad) for children. Basic Ear-Training Exercises Play a note on the piano and sing the pitch back some novice singers find this hard to do at first, as theyre used to tuning in to the overtones in the human voice.  Being able to sing pitches played on an instrument is the most important piece of basic ear training you can do, especially if you want to sing your songs with accompaniment, join a choir, or form a band. Play a simple tune on the piano no more than eight notes or so (you may wish to get someone else to do this for you).  Sing the tune back, paying special attention to getting not only all the pitches and intervals correct, but the rhythm, too. Learn to identify basic things about songs are they fast/slow, happy/sad (generally in major keys for happy and minor keys for sad), and so on.  This will help you work out what you need to know about new pieces to learn them quicker. Training Your Voice The Ultimate Test As with most skills, you can only get so far by yourself, and thats particularly true with studying an instrument or learning how to sing.  Its not possible to hear our own voices with the same degree of accuracy that an outsider can, and a trusted pair of musical ears is always going to give you a more honest answer than recording equipment besides, recording equipment cant advise you what to do next if things arent sounding right! Even if your aspirations as a singer dont extend beyond joining a choir or the chorus of your local amateur operatic society, and you never intend to sing solo in public, its easy to get frustrated by the limitations of your voice when faced with more complex and demanding music. Finding a Tutor for Your Child Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, and youve been trying hard to do everything you can to help your child. Youre working with a therapist, explored or started medication, and youve put behavior plans into place at home. Youve even partnered with your childs teacher to get extra help in the classroom. And while some things are getting better, your childs grades are not improving and youre worried about your child falling behind his or her peers. It might be time to enlist the help of a tutor to give your child the academic boost that he or she needs to succeed. But how do you know how to find a tutor who will be a good fit? What should you look for in a tutor or a tutoring program when your child has ADHD? Heres my helpful checklist that will help you evaluate options in your area: The vibe. Your childs tutoring experience starts with how he or she will feel about the space and the staff. Is the space warm and inviting? Does it look like a place that your child would be drawn to? Hows the rapport between the staff and students? What does the energy in the room feel like? Trust your instincts: if something doesnt feel right its time to look elsewhere. Strong staff engagement with your child. It may seem like a no-brainer, but every child in the room should be engaged with a staff member. Some students may be doing individual work, but staff should be overseeing these students and checking in on their progress. You should get the feeling that the staff genuinely care about their students and the work that they are doing. And that the students feel comfortable looking to the staff and teachers for help when they need it. Challenging activities. Tutoring should not be about a teacher doing work for a student. Instead it should include structured learning activities that are adapted to your childs specific academic level. These activities should start at a fairly low level of difficulty to help your child get his or her feet wet and build confidence, and then gradually become more challenging as your child develops new skills, strategies, and knowledge. Instructions should always be clear and concise, and even challenging work should be within the childs reach. The work should never be so challenging that your child is constantly struggling, feeling defeated, or disengaged. Self-directed work time. No matter the curriculum or teaching strategies that are in place, tutoring should always include some independent work time. During these time-limited periods your child will have the opportunity to complete assignments on his or her own but can also ask for assistance when needed. This helps kids gain confidence, and learn strategies that will carry over to independent work time at school and at home. Space! Are there individual work areas as well as small group spaces? A solid desk and comfortable chair? Good lighting? Does it feel overcrowded or just right? The space should be clean, well-organized, well-lit and have designated space for activities. There should be a sense of shared care for the space, from the owner all the way down to staff and students. Specific ADHD training. While there are great tutoring choices out there, youre looking for one that specifically has the training, knowledge and experience of working with kids with ADHD. While many centers may say they work with students who have ADHD, ask about specific ADHD training that has been provided to the staff and teachers. Learn about the specific strategies that they use for dealing with typical ADHD-related challenges, like having difficulty staying seated, talking too much, or being easily distracted. Look for a combination of positive reinforcement (praise), clear instructions, engaging, structured activities, frequent breaks and a limited use of negative consequences. Choosing a tutor or a tutoring center can be tough and time consuming. But ensuring a good fit between you, your child, and the center is the key to success. Here, one of our most experienced GMAT tutors, John Easter, analyzes a question about prime numbers using problem solving skills. Problem #44 of the2018 Official Guide to the GMATstates that if n is a prime number greater than 3, what is the remainder when n^2 is divided by 12? (A) 0 (B) 1 (C) 2 (D) 3 (E) 5 I call these kinds of problemsTheorem Problems. What I mean by that is that there is some deep mathematical rule that forms the basis of the problem. In this case that rule is about squares modulo p and quadratic residues.Neither of these is part of what the GMAT is testing - even if you're treating the quantitative section as a math test and not a game. Clearly someone working for GMAC is nerding out. Unfortunately for the nerd in question, and fortunately for us, mathematicians don't do multiple choice. When you see something like this, take a deep breath and remember that PS (problems solving) questions are matching games. We just have to match the question to the answer. We don't need math degrees. So, pick a prime greater than 3, square it, and divide by 12. What's the remainder? For example, 5 is a prime greater than 3 (in fact, the smallest prime greater than three - keep it simple), 5^2 is 25, and when 25 is divided by 12, the remainder is 1. The correct answer is B. It's really that simple. Now, an important question: Do we need to check another example? The answer is NO! There's only one answer per question!
